What are the Best wheelchair-accessible car vehicles?

The simple answer;

There is No best wheelchair-accessible car vehicle. It all comes down to your individual needs.

One can enter our showroom and want a large family car with four large seats and a lowered floor for a tramper eight mph mobility scooter. After asking if they drive manual or automatic gears, we would point this person to a Kia Sedona or, more up-to-date, a four-seater caddy maxi.

On another day, we can have an 80-year-old lady wanting a smaller car with automatic gears. The vehicle must not be too big for her driveway. Her husband is in a push wheelchair and weighs 15 stone. At that point, we would show the lady a Berlingo automatic with a power winch to load the wheelchair.

At no point is a Kia Sedona manual better than a Citroen Berlingo automatic or vice versa. It all comes down to your needs.

Hear at wheelchair cars Ltd. We like to picture your situation.

Your situation starts with your needs.

We can tell you which car we think is best for you and your situation. But we will never say, “Oh, we think the VW caddy is the best.” Because it is only the best if you want five seats and space in the rear for a wheelchair, we have people coming into our showroom all the time, and I can guarantee they don’t have the exact needs of the last person looking at wheelchair cars.

A wheelchair-accessible vehicle needs to suit,

I spoke to a lady last week, and she had a car delivered from a motor company in Blackpool. Unfortunately, the car she bought online was delivered in the dark. Nobody showed her how to load a wheelchair, how to work the straps to retain a wheelchair, let alone inspect or test drive the car. She phoned us because she could not close the ramp properly; as it turned out, the wheelchair was an oversized reclining chair with head support that needed to travel slightly tilted for occupants’ comfort.

Why on earth anybody would buy a car from a car dealer;

Who is not interested in giving customers the care and attention they need?

We deal with vulnerable disabled people.

These people rely on honest behaviour. Ethical behaviour should start with the advert. For example, if a vehicle was photographed on a country road or outside a park, why was it not photographed outside the garage/dealership?

Follow this link for our thoughts on people who take photos away from the garage they pretend to have. BEWARE! dealers who take photos on country roads are not showing you a true picture.

Be Careful! Buy from a specialist with premises.

There are many false claims out there from garages selling wheelchair cars.

Disabled Cars. one dealer writes. A family-run business with over twenty years experience (20 years experience in what, to date, they have been selling wav’s for four years) why lie?

Our advice is only to deal with a specialist working from a garage regulated by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority)—we are! Our Reference number is 715363. Ask the garage on first contact if the FCA regulates you.

Delivery of your new /used wheelchair car.

On delivery of your wheelchair car at your home,

you should;

  • Ask for delivery on approval!
  • Test drive the vehicle,
  • Be shown the belts and restraints.
  • Taught how to load a wheelchair.
  • Have enough time to inspect the car and body, etc.
  • Make sure the wheelchair fits in the car safely.
  • Have all the paperwork and safety certificates for the vehicle.

You should NOT;

  • Be thrown a set of keys and told to sign here love in the dark. (don’t sign).
  • Have to pay for the car entirely before delivery. (don’t pay in full before delivery).
  • Accept poor condition, lousy paintwork and faults. (reject vehicles in poor condition).

How to load a 6 mph mobility scooter into a wav

This video shows the correct way of loading a mobility scooter into a wheelchair car, please note at no point does the demonstrator stand in front or behind the scooter, the throttle on the scooter is used in an on-off motion so it can be controlled, no straps were fitted on to the scooter because the demo was just to show the loading,

              RAC APPROVED DEALER

              Buying a Wheelchair-Accessible car is one of the most significant financial outlays you make, so we understand the importance of choosing the right vehicle from the right dealership. To give you extra confidence in finding the right Wheelchair-Accessible car for you, we’ve partnered with the RAC to become an RAC-approved dealer.

              What does this mean?

              Being an RAC-approved dealer means you’re dealing with a brand you can trust. The RAC wouldn’t partner with a dealership that didn’t share its attitude to supporting the customer by delivering the best possible experience. It means we comply with a code that is Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) approved, a not-for-profit organisation that ensures trading standards are being met.

              Every vehicle sold comes with the following:

              • RAC Approved Preparation Standard

              All our vehicles MUST meet a vehicle preparation standard before they are sold. We are audited at least six times a year by the RAC to ensure we are consistently preparing all our vehicles to meet these standards.

              • RAC Warranty

              There is a three-month warranty with every eligible vehicle*. RAC Warranty is included with all makes and models of vehicles and can give you extra reassurance in the event of something happening to your vehicle. For an additional fee, you can extend the term of the warranty to up to 36 months.

              • 12 months free RAC Breakdown cover**

              Every vehicle includes a free 12-month RAC Breakdown Cover, which may require activation.

              RAC Accident Care – Your RAC breakdown cover includes Accident Care and Motor Legal Care (for the duration of the Breakdown Cover).

              • Car Data Check

              Introduction: Finding a trustworthy dealership is paramount when purchasing a Wav vehicle in the UK. RAC-approved dealerships offer a seal of quality and reliability, providing consumers with peace of mind and confidence in their vehicle purchase. With a network of approved dealerships nationwide, the RAC ensures that customers can access a wide range of high-quality vehicles and exceptional customer service.

              What Does RAC Approved Mean? RAC Approved Dealerships adhere to rigorous standards set by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), one of the UK’s most respected automotive organizations. These standards cover various aspects of vehicle sales and customer service, including vehicle preparation, vehicle history checks, and fair pricing. By choosing an RAC Approved Dealership, consumers can trust that they are dealing with a reputable and trustworthy business.

              Benefits of Buying from an RAC Approved Dealership:

              1. Quality Assurance: Vehicles sold by RAC Approved Dealerships undergo thorough pre-sale inspections to ensure they meet stringent quality standards. This includes checks on mechanical condition, safety features, and overall roadworthiness.
              2. Comprehensive Vehicle History Checks: RAC Approved Dealerships conduct comprehensive vehicle history checks to verify important information such as mileage, ownership history, and any outstanding finance or insurance issues. This ensures transparency and protects customers from purchasing vehicles with hidden problems.
              3. Extended Warranty Options: Many RAC Approved Dealerships offer extended warranty options for added peace of mind. These warranties provide additional coverage beyond the manufacturer’s warranty, protecting customers against unexpected repair costs.
              4. Exceptional Customer Service: RAC-approved dealerships are committed to providing excellent customer service throughout the vehicle-buying process. From knowledgeable sales staff to transparent pricing and fair trade-in valuations, customers can expect a positive and hassle-free experience.
              5. Dispute Resolution: In the unlikely event of a dispute between a customer and an RAC Approved Dealership, the RAC provides a formal dispute resolution process to help resolve issues fairly and impartially. This gives customers added confidence and protection when making a purchase.

              Finding an RAC Approved Dealership: Finding an RAC Approved Dealership is easy, thanks to the RAC’s online directory of approved dealerships. Customers can search for dealerships by location, make, and model, making it simple to find the perfect vehicle to suit their needs. As well as the standard UK Vosa mot test, our wheelchair-accessible vehicles are now supplied with a fresh, dated safety certificate to cover all the wheelchair restraints and disabled passenger seat belts,

              The standard UK mot test will test the roadworthiness of a car. The MOT will all so test the safety belt and anchor points. Still, this mot test will not check the condition and ability of wheelchair restraints and safety belts for the wheelchair and occupant in a wheelchair-adapted car. We, as a company, have taken this on board. We consider the wheelchair and user just as crucial as any other passenger in a vehicle. We have seen wheelchair restraints in wheelchair-adapted cars from other dealers in a shocking state. Our vehicles are tested, and a safety certificate is supplied with your car details, dated and signed by a qualified tester. © copyright wheelchair cars ltd 2016

              For a limited period, wheelchair cars Ltd is offering to test the restraints on any wheelchair car, even if purchased elsewhere, for free. All we ask is a little notice before you visit us, call our main number on 0161 793 5934.

              Throughout the virus pandemic wheelchair cars Ltd has been taking deposits to reserve wheelchair-accessible cars, and some vehicles have been delivered safely at the customer’s request.

              We agree the virus is still out there and we must remain very careful and alert, we will do everything possible to protect you.

              This is the procedure we are working with at the moment;

              If you see a vehicle on our website you like, you can secure the said wheelchair car on approval,

              The secured vehicle can be delivered safely whenever you want;

              Once the vehicle is prepared for sale;

              We will arrange a time and day to deliver the wav on approval,

              The vehicle will be fully sanitized before being loaded onto our truck.

              We are only using one driver in the truck (Peter).

              The truck / Peter will not stop at a fuel station or services etc.

              On arrival at your home, Peter will put on a mask and latex gloves before removing the vehicle from the truck.

              The wav will then be shown to you at a safe distance,

              The vehicle will have trade plates on and you can have a test drive on your own. details for unaccompanied test drives. (sorry we are unable to do unaccompanied test drives again at the moment)

              You can try the wheelchair in the car and we will talk you through the correct safe way to load a wheelchair from 2 meters away. (the best way to learn is do it).

              When you are fully happy with the car and the loading of a wheelchair we can do the paperwork.

              The paperwork can be completed outside, peter will NOT come into your house 100% guarantee.

              We were the first wav company to start sanitizing vehicles due to covid, other small-minded dealers started to copy our ideas, (hello m-nationwide reading this one as well).

              Things to Consider When Buying a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

              Wheelchair-accessible vehicles allow more comfort and convenience for passengers who use a wheelchair. When using a regular vehicle, a wheelchair needs to be lifted into the car, which may be difficult as it can be extremely heavy. The wheelchair user may also be forced to get in and out of their wheelchair, which can be both stressful and uncomfortable, particularly if their mobility is limited.

              However, with many WAVs, the wheelchair can simply be pushed into the rear of the car with the passenger still seated, meaning there’s no need for any heavy lifting and the passenger never needs to leave the comfort of their wheelchair. This makes travelling by car much less stressful for both the driver and the passenger.

              A wheelchair-accessible vehicle can remove much of the difficulties of car travel, but there are still a number of considerations you should make before purchasing your vehicle. Depending on your needs, some adapted cars will be more suitable than others, so to make sure you choose the right one for you, here’s what you should look out for when purchasing an adapted vehicle.

              What type of vehicle do you need?

              There’s a wide range of wheelchair-accessible vehicles, which can make choosing the right one confusing. You should base your choice on your needs and level of mobility. Here are the most common wheelchair-accessible cars currently on the market.

              Ramp

              Cars fitted with a ramp allow your wheelchair to be pushed into the vehicle and fixed into your seating position securely, meaning you can travel without leaving the comfort of your wheelchair. One thing to consider is where you want your seating position to be as it might be more difficult to communicate with the driver, depending on where your wheelchair is placed. This type of WAV is for those with limited mobility.

              Boot Storage

              This could simply be a large MVP (multi-purpose vehicle) that you can use to store the wheelchair in the rear of the vehicle. This is one of the most common types of WAVs, but these require the passenger to have enough mobility to get in and out of the wheelchair to sit in the passenger seat, so this type may be unsuitable for some.

              Wheelchair hoist

              This will be fitted with an electric or hydraulic hoist, which can be operated from inside the car. Again, this type of car requires the wheelchair user to have enough mobility to get out of the chair and into the front seat so it might not be the best choice for everyone, but if you or your driver struggle to lift the heavy chair into the car then this can help take the load off your hands.

              Rooftop storage

              Some types of wheelchair-accessible vehicles allow you to store your wheelchair in a specially-designed box. A hoist operated from inside the vehicle will lift the wheelchair into the box for safe and convenient storage. This is another type of adapted vehicle that would suit someone able to get into the seat themselves but who struggles with the lifting of the wheelchair.

              Driver-operated

              If you thought wheelchair users were restricted to being passengers, think again! As technology advances, so do the types of vehicles offered for wheelchair users and there are cars on the market that have been adapted to allow wheelchair users to operate the vehicle themselves.

              Size of the vehicle

              When you’re looking for the perfect WAV, you need to make sure the size is right. Check the vehicle is large enough to accommodate your wheelchair and affords adequate space to ensure a comfortable ride. Be mindful of the size of your drive too. WAVs may be larger than other vehicles, so you don’t want to get your shiny new vehicle home only to discover it doesn’t fit on the drive!

              Performance and fuel efficiency

              Larger vehicles will obviously weigh more, so in some cases, this can affect both fuel efficiency and the performance of the car. It’s likely these are two important considerations, so if that’s the case ask the supplier about how much fuel you can expect the car to use, while a test drive is always a good idea when you’re choosing a vehicle so you can get an idea of how it feels when driven.

              Cost

              The cost is clearly something you need to consider, as most of our decisions are governed by a budget. Try to choose a car that covers all your needs, but if your budget is limited then select a vehicle that covers your most important requirements. To discuss your options, call a member of our team and they’ll be happy to advise you and go through what we currently have available.

              Here at Wheelchair Cars Ltd, we believe that every journey should be as comfortable and hassle-free as possible, which is why we’re dedicated to providing only the best wheelchair-accessible vehicles for our customers.
